        Tue, July 20, 2010 - 2:30AM 0 Comments

Back from the Miss Teen Canada World pageant in Toronto! It was simply amazing! I have met so many AWESOME individuals! Although I did not get into the top 20 out of the 62 girls, I know I did great even so! For me its not about a moment of success...it is about the journey and I have been stretched in so many ways the last week! I have learned good public speaking skills, leadership skills, and what it means to be a confident person! Thank you everyone for all your support and continued support as I still aim at making a difference in the local communities as Miss Teen Northwestern Ontario!!! :)

One of the top sponsors of Free the Children is none other than Oprah Winfrey who motivated the viewers of her show to donate to a worthy cause which later became known as Oprah's Angel Network. It facilitates leadership for youth, education for children overseas, and makes sure that the basic rights of children throughout the world is not being overlooked. This organization started in 1997 continues to make a difference throughout the developing world today, especially since it has worked along side with Free the Children in its endeavors to free children throughout the world from poverty and exploitation. Oprah wanted to reach out and help the vulnerable and less fortunate, which led her to connect with the Free the Children organization started by Craig Keilburger when he was only twelve years old. Oprah's Angel Network has funded hundreds of organizations, but has more than just funded Free the Children, for the two organizations came together to build over 55 schools in 12 countries so that children less privileged have the oppurtunity to receive an education. These schools have provided children all across the globe to pursue their dreams of having a brighter future! Some places like rural China had not only schools built for them, but received livestock as well so that the families could have sustainability.
As a corporate effort, the organizations started a project called O Ambassadors which encourages youth to be compassionate and active citizens standing up for those who are less fortunate or oppressed in any way. Here the youth are motivated to make a difference and be the change! Both Oprah's Angel Network and Free the Children work with one another to pave a path for a brighter future for children all around the world.

Blog Assignment #2: Purpose Driven Youth

        Fri, July 09, 2010 - 3:26AM 0 Comments

People say I have a compassionate and open heart for those around me. I genuinely care for those who are less-fortunate than I, and when I was fifteen years old I started a non-profit organization called Adopt a Doll to raise money for the building of shelters in Guatemala. I would have little handmade dolls shipped from Guatemala, attach them to adoption certificates and sell them, the proceeds going back to help Guatemalan families. I also have been twice to Guatemala to help build the shelters with the Adopt a Doll project. These trips have changed my perspective on life more than I can ever say. To see the joy and how thankful the Guatemalan children were despite their impoverished circumstances really spoke to me. It has made me want to be incredibly thankful for all that I have!

I have often been called the world traveller because I have been to over ten countries and have relatives in Germany and England. I lived in Germany for a while as a child and know what it is like to be submerged into a new culture, but even so, I was not prepared for my experience of being in Guatemala where my character was shaped in so many ways.

I want my television show to be similar to my platform which is motivating youth across Canada to realize their self-worth and in their uniqueness to turn from being self-conscious to become more conscious of others. What I see in many youth throughout Canada today is a lack of purpose and motivation, since some believe that they are too small to make a difference. But if they would realize how they individually matter, they could turn their focus from their selves to a needy world around them.

I have a heart to see youth gain direction in their lives. To dream BIG and set goals and never let anyone tell them they can not achieve their dreams not even themselves. That they would watch and see that what appears to be sometimes impossible can become possible . . . that they would start to look beyond themselves. As we see when looking at people like Craig Kielburger, it only takes one person to make a difference. It takes the genuine concern of a twelve-year-old to make a difference who today runs an organization called Free the Children which still impacts thousands of needy people across the world today.

If I could run my own television show it would be called Purpose Driven Youth, a reality show that features motivational youth speakers such as Zach Hunter who at twelve years old started a campaign called Loose Change to Loosen Chains; it was about taking action against slavery through out the world as he raised money for organizations such as ‘Free the Slaves’ and ‘International Justice Mission’. Other motivational speakers  includes youth who speak regarding the Free the Children organization and the great ‘Me to We’ campaign that reaches to poverty stricken people all over the world!

I have been greatly impacted by blessing the children in Guatemala with new homes, for in blessing others, I feel blessed as well. There is something about helping others which brings our focus off ourselves and fills us with purpose. As the host I will interview each of the motivational speakers on my show Purpose Driven Youth and then a team of ten ordinary youth from across Canada (about one from every province) would be selected to join the motivational speaker with his or her endeavours overseas, helping for ten days with building homes, making sure children have clean water to drink, or even helping to teach English, all depending under which motivational leader and organization they were placed. Now the ten youth chosen for each of these trips are not nominated based on their history or status or past humanitarian efforts, but quite the contrary. The Purpose Driven Youth show will be introducing unmotivated perhaps even troubled teens who are simply stuck in a certain pattern of life without focus, direction, or vision. I, as the host, will first interview each of the teens before they go on their 15 day voyage, asking them questions like what their expectations are of the upcoming overseas trip (where they will be working with a particular global organization). This will be a reality show where the camera will be running as the teens are helping build homes, visit orphanages, etc., depending with what organization they are affiliated. Whether it be with the ‘Me the We’ program in Kenya or ‘Loose Change to Loosen Chains” project or whichever organization it may be, I believe this will have a positive impact upon each teen as they begin to get a broader scope of a world beyond them. Those watching my show will get to know each of these teens well, but the exciting thing is they will get to see first hand the gradual process of transformation taking place in them as they start viewing the world through different lenses.

This is what happened to me when I was in Guatemala; my perspective on life changed; it was the simple things like playing with the Guatemalan children on the street that I will never forget or when I was needing to leave but I could not get up from my knelt position because the children were swarming me with hugs and yes, kisses. I believe that those children have stolen a part of my heart.

Anyways, after the fifteen days are over, each of the teens will be interviewed again and will have the chance to share what they learned on the trip, how they now view things, perhaps it is as simple as having learned to be more grateful for what they have back home when they see how little the children have there. I truly believe that one leader leads to another, and as a motivational youth speaker leads each team in helping overseas, these once troubled teens have an opportunity to see life with new lenses and later become leaders themselves and like a domino effect more and more shall become motivated to ‘Be the Change’!

Two of the sponsors of Purpose Driven Youth would include Smojoe and as well as Faze Magazine. Even though the teens will get coverage over the media when helping overseas, they will each use the fantastic blogging website of Smojoe in order to blog daily so that their families and parents may be kept up to date with what new things they are learning and experiencing. Purpose Driven Youth will foster not only a community environment between these teens as they work together but via Smojoe a great community blogging network can exist between the teens beginning long before they even meet each other on the trip, so that they feel more comfortable with each other and can then later work effectively as a team! Faze Magazine would like to sponsor Purpose Driven Youth because this show is not only a worthy cause directed at humanitarian work, but also is focused on changing the lives of teens. Faze Magazine, being focused on youth, would benefit in its publicity as their articles feature the true stories of teens who have been on the Purpose Driven Youth show. Not only is Faze Magazine then seen as supporting various global non-profit organizations, but also as helping impact youth throughout the country as other teens read these articles of inspiration!

        Blog Assignment #1

        Tue, July 06, 2010 - 12:55AM 0 Comments

Have you ever gotten a laugh after telling people where you live? I have. I live in Emo. I get it all the time. Usually after I mention where I live I include, “Yes, I live in Emo, but I’m not emo.” As much as the town name sounds ominous, the place itself is what I would say the most beautiful in the district! It has an absolutely lovely river that runs right along Front Street, and just across the Rainy River is none other than America. I remember in the winter time when I was younger, my friends and I would walk out onto the river, find the middle mark, and write the boundary line of the countries in the snow.

I love my hometown. Its perfect population size of 1200 – not too big so people still exchange friendly greetings along the sidewalk on Front Street and not too small that people know every nook and cranny of your personal life like other small towns. Emo is beautiful because of its Lions’ Park along the river bank where there is a gold statue of a lion where I liked to climb onto when I was little. Also, there are docks on the river which are always a nice spot to hang out with friends.

I live right on the edge of town a few metres by the train track! Even though the whistle sign is next to our house and there have been times where our pictures frames needed some realigning due to the train, I still love my home and where I live. I call it a dollhouse, because that is what it looks like: a pretty Victorian style dollhouse. I also really enjoy that we live just on the outskirts of town so that I can go jogging out on roads where all I see is farms and livestock.

The people of Emo are so friendly and the businesses are all locally owned meaning that the customer service is simply awesome! Front Street consists of a hardware store, pharmacy, natural health store, bank, and clothing store. We also have a museum. When I tell people I work at the Emo museum, they say “what they have those?” which makes me always laugh. That is Emo for you!

When it comes to sponsors, I found my hometown extremely supportive! I want to sang thank you to Tomkins Hardware, Esso Gas Station, Norlunds Service Station, and The Hair and Body Shop for all your support!
